Virginia Selective Service local boards are now sending letters to college and high school students which will give each student, who has beeft ordered for induction, the opportunity to request permission to enlist in the branch of service of his choice, provided he makes this choice within 30 days.
College students who do not qualify scholastically for deferment or do not make the necessary score on the Selective. Service college qualification test may choose their branch of service. College and high school students who have been ordered for induction and whose induction was postponed until the end of the academic year must enlist and report for active duty within 30 days after the close of school.
Letters are also being mailed to college students, whether ordered for induction or not, requesting information as to whether the student has taken or will take the Selective Service college qualification test, and whether or not the college that he attended during the last academic year is going to inform the local board of his scholastic standing.
A college student, whether ordered for induction or not, will be considered for defesment during the nest school year if he makes a qualifying score on the test or has a qualifying scholastic standing. “Students should promptly reply to letters from their local boards regarding the tests and class standing in order that the local board may delay further processing of the student for induction long enough to consider the evidence to be received,” an official at state headquarters has said.
