With the hot weather of the week end, the youngsters in Rappahannock said that the only place fit to be was “Ole ’Hollow’’ swimming hole. It’s always cool there, and the cold water makes it necessary to come out in the sunshine every now and then to get warmed up.
Tis with envy I view lady-like creatures in hot weather. I wish I pould step daintily out on a blistering-hot day and look cool as a cucumber. Not me! No such good luck.
When the weather is hot, i don’t perspire, I sweat. My brow is not flushed as a lady’s should be; I’m red as a beet and cross as the ole’ scratch. Some nice, refined lady will become faint with the heat and have to be fanned gently; while I get sick at my stomach and the results ain’t refined nor ladylike!
With each sultry day I become shorter tempered; I can’t even stand myself, much less expect anyone else to stand me. I promise myself faithfully that when winter comes—oh joy!—and the winds and sleet howl and blow, when the snow piles high, and my feet freeze, then shall I revel - in the glory of—er, chapped hands, a red nose, and bad colds.

I heard a fellow the other day in a perfect sweat of a temper fit! He was beyond the boiling point and his blood-pressure must have been nearing an altitude record.
The temper was caused by a caustic—and unkind—remark by a man whom he had always called a friend.
