On a tract of unclaimed land in the village of Woodville, Captain William Walden had a load of lumber unloaded, thereby staking a claim on which to build a church, a simple wooden building was erected and this became St. Paul’s Protestant Episcopal Church.
The first rector of St. Paul’s Church, Rev. William Thomas Leavell, accepted a call to this parish in 1853. His son, William Thomas, was christened in St. Paul’s in 1855 with Mrs. Skinner and Mrs. Leavell as sponsors.
After John Brown’s Raid at Harpers Ferry, Mr. Leavell returned to his home in Jefferson County.
