Un i'TMJay mgnt tne ah oiars . honorary leadership organization, topped their new members, 30 girls and 26 boys, all outstanding in achievement and leadership. It is the greatest honor obtainable in 4-H to be,chosen for this club. It is a great thirll to the members chosen, as they do not know of their election until the moment their names are called out, and they are escorted around the circle to be presented to the Big Chief, and their records are declared worthy by the Chief Scribe.
There were 3 foreign guests this year, including Mias Myunt May, a farm youth worker from Burma; Peter Tovborg Jenson, farm youth advisor from Denmark, and Bruce Patterson,—a young dairy farmer* from New Zealand. Mr. Jenson described the United States as “Not a Country, it’s a World.” His word of advice was “Take care of your freedom, but learn the responsibilities that go with it”. Mr. Patterson, in speaking of “Working together) for Better World».Understanding” (the theme of the Short Course) warned U.S. citizens not to think they “have a monopoly on democracy’ and not to talk of peace and then put in digs abqgt other countries. He pointed out the democracy and freedom of Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, although they are still members of the British Empire.
All sorts of State contest winners were announced and awards presented during the week. These are annual awards and they included trips to Chicago for the 4-H Club Congress in November; 17-jewel watches, and sets of silverware, various cash awards.
Among the classes offered were Dairy Judging and Demonstration, Livestock Judging, Poultry Production and Management, Tractor Operation and Maintenance, Song Leadership, Came Leadership, Folk Game Leadership, Tips on Preparing Record Books, Instruction in basic ballroom dancing steps and social courtesies that go with them, a course in good manners called “It's Fun Being Correct”. There were many demonstrations given along most project lines offered in 4-H.
As if these were not enough, Friday night, after the impressive All Star ceremony, a huge progressive party was given, with movies, stunts, songs, folk games, dancing and refreshments, not to mention the last event of all, when the 380 delegates, including 41 leaders, 40 farm and home agents, 3 foreign guests and 6 instructor* and many visitors met in a great camp fire circle and each renewed hig pledge: “My Head to Clearer Thinking, My Heart to Greater Loyalty, My Hands to Larger Sery vice for ml Club, My Community and my Country.” Each person held a candle and it was an awesome sight to see nearly a thousand flickering flames, symbolizing faithfulness to this pledge for an
