The Washington Baptist Church is located on Gay and Proctor Streets in the county seat of Rappahannock*County. The church structure was built in 1875 by Corbin Proctor as a branch of the Mt. Salem Baptist Church. The building committee was composed of the following: Dr. A. W. Reed, James A. Templeton, James F. Kemper, B. F. Miller and F. L. Slaughter.
The constitution of the church took place on January 10, 1882, under the leadership of James F. Kemper. The first regular pastor was the Rev. L. R. Steele, who accepted the call July 25, 1882 and served until April 4, 1894. Other pastors to serve the congregation were A. J. Fristoe, Hugh Goodwin, S; W. Cole, M. F. Sanford, supply pastor; J. F. Kemper, W. J. Reynolds, N. F. McFadden, John A. St. Clair, Louis A. Broughman and the present pastor M. E. Sliger.
The church is affiliated with the Shiloh Association and the Baptist General Association of Virginia and the Southern Baptist Convention. The Shiloh Association met with the church September 1, 1896 and again September 1-3, 1926 and during August 29-30,1934. The present jnembership 146 and the board of deacons is composed of W. C. Campbell, chairman; E. M. Jones, G. L. Updike, A. J. Slaughter, R. V. Snead, and B. R. Cox,
