Program Announced
For Concert August 12
A symphony orchestra composed of between 50 and 60 professional musicians, under the direction of William Haaker, will play for the first concert of the Blue Ridge Husic Festival, which will be held at Avon Mills, Washington, on the afternoon of Sunday, August 12.
Mr. Haaker’s program will be as follows:
Overture to the ‘Marriage of Figaro’—Mozart
Symphony in D Minor (unfinished ) —Schubert
Rosenkavalier Waltzes R. Strauss Hungarian Fantasie—Liszt English Folk Song Suit—Vaughn
English Folk Song Suit :— Vaughn Williams
Two Slavonic Dances—Dvorak
George Davis, executive director of the festival, said that musicians for the festival orchestra were in large part recruited from regular members of symphony orchestras elsewhere. Players from both the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington and the Virginia Symphony of Richmond twill take part.
Two other concerts will follow on the afternoon of August 13 and 26. The second will feature distinguished vocalists and instrumentalists. An orchestral concert will conclude the series.
The Blue Ridge Music Festival has attracted wide interest both on the part of the public and musicians. Its program includes a summer music workshop sponsored by the Virginia Symphony from August 6 through August 26.
