One of these days I’m going to try to tell just one tale and not have someone immediately top it! Recently, the paper quoted some nice “back-fence gossip,” or some of those “they say” stories, and stated that wages of $2 an hour were being paid in a neighboring county. I was so sure no one could tell one bigger, that I considered asking Mr. Campbell to lend me his Fisherman’s Liar’s License to hang on the wall of the office.
No such god luck! Along comes a lady and tells me that a friend of hers in New Jersey says that the maid now demands $1 an hour for regular housework, and has to be paid extra if she is to do hard work like scrubbing and windowwashing !
