Clanagan Killed In
Saturday Shooting
Morton Clanagan, Negro, died Saturday night about 10:30, from a shot through the chest.
Early Sunday morning, Otha Gatewood, Negro, called Sheriff J. W. Critzer and told him to come to the home of Herman Patterson, near Pine Knot Inn, where Fatewood gave himself up to the Sheriff, stating that he had done the shooting.
Gatewood, now in the county jail, has had nothing to say con-* cerning the Shooting. Reportedly never given much to talking, Gatewood has remained quiet since being brought to jail.
The shooting took place Saturday night, when Clanagan waa seated on the back seat of a car,, parked near Pine Knot Inn. He was sitting between two Negro girls, one his sister, when, so reports go, Otha Gatewood came to the car, opened the door, and fired a shot. The bullet entered Chanagan's chest, high on /the right side and lodged in the sixth rib on the left side of the chest. It was stated that Clanagan got out of the car and walked about 30 feet before he dropped. He was dead by the time the sheriff and doctor arrived.
Otha Gatewood left the scene Saturday night, but gave himself up Sunday morning.
The hearing will be this morning at 10 o’clock.
Otha Gatewood worked for Mr. Wire at “The Shade” and Morton Clanagan worked for Downing Wood. Both of the men had reputations as good, (reliable, quiet workmen, and were considered orderly citizens. It is supposed that the altercation was caused by jealousy over a mutual girl friend.
The shooting did not occur on the property of the Pine Knot Inn but on a side road leading from Pine Knot to the home of Brown Patterson.
