Like the weather — people are always talking about it, but doing nothing—the highway safety problem gets the talk treatment, as a rule.
Here lately, it looks like something is going to be done to help make the highways less of a death trap for motorists and pedestrians.
In Washington, D.C., a Judge has announced a “get tough” policy, and he’s beginning to put it into practice. When he gets a repeat offender in his traffic , court, he throws the book at ’em, dishing out jail sentences for driving with revoked permits, and slapping prison sentences on reckless drivers. After hearing some of the first on the list get the stiff sentences from the Judge, other holders of traffic violation tickets quickly got their hearing postponed, to take their chances with a jury or else get a chance at a less-serious-minded judge.
The Judge may have the answer. Maybe accidents are too numerous because we can get by too easily in case of violations of traffic laws. If we know that sentences are strict, hard, and definitely going to fall on us, we may be more careful.
