to get about a $25 return, but the government chdck arrived for something over $500,000. He took it to his employer, who called the bureau of “infernal revenue” and informed them of the error. They* refused to believe it, stating that their machines could make no error! Of course, it all wound up with the boy returning the big check to the government.
It seems a shame, somehow. There‘s the possibility that the money might have done the boy some good—and think of the thousands of ways the government will waste that half-million, dozens of times, and accomplish nd good. The lad could have furnished an excellent source of reading matter for children in teaching a lesson on honesty: the story of the boy who returned the check because it was not his, and then was rewarded for his honesty. The lesson on honesty might have done some good in the future—and precious few lessons on honesty are being taught by the government officials in these days!
