LOCAL OFFICERS PLAN TO MAKE
RAPPAHANNOCK HIGHWAYS SAFE
In line with the Governor’s Safety Campaign, Sheriff J. W. Critzer and State Police William Buntin have announced their full co-operation in helping to prevent death on the highways in Rappahannock.
This campiagn toward highway safety has. been brought more and more into pubilc notice with the startling and horrifying news of the numbers of deaths on highways throughout the state and nation.
Sheriff Critzer and Trooper Buntin have stated their willingness to do their share in preventing accidents in the county. They agree that, if need be, they will drive a hard bargain against the dangers of speed and carelessness shown by drivers on the county highways. They hope that unpleasantness may not have to occur, but if their duties do lead to making some arrests that seem harsh, they know that if one life is saved, then the campaign is worthwhile.
The object of this concerted effort to wipe speed and carelessness from the highways is to furnish the “ouncf of prevention” and make unnecessary the “pound of cure.” School will open in twelve more days. The children will be on the highways, at the mercy of drivers of automobiles. If a few arrests will help make drivers more conscious of their responsibilities, then it is best to let them learn this way rather than have a child killed.
Young drivers need to be reminded that the lives of other people depend upon the manner in which they drive. Children need to be cautioned daily to watch when they cross highways. Many drivers need to be reminded that a sleepy driver can be a killer, even though he may not mean to be. The dangers from an intoxicated driver have been re-iterated and everyone knows them.
