Feeder Calf Sales

Scheduled in Fall

Some 15,000 animals will be sold at the annual series of Virginia feeder calf sales this year.

M. L. Dalton, asociate animal husbandman at V.P.I., says Virginia farmers are becoming increasingly interested in marketing their calves co-operatively through these sales, and that two new sales—at Petersburg and Roanoke —are being added to the list this year.

The new sale at Roanoke, October 2, is being established at the request of farmers in Franklin, Roanoke, Botetourt, Floyd, and Craig counties. It will be held at ■ theRoanoke.Livestock Market._

The calves are graded by the Virgins Division of Markets. All consignments will be vaccinated, for Black leg, innoculated against shipping fever, and most will be de-horned.

Dalton says also that anyone buying heifer calves at the sales can have them vaccinated for Bang’s disease by a state veterinarian free of charge. This service is being made available for the first time this year, and is expected to do much to control the spread of the disease in Virginia.
