Thornton’s Gap Primitive Baptist Church was. organized in November, 1787, in what is known as the Old Hollow. The records do not show who or how many were in the constitution, but .says, “The church was composed of a considerable number of persons baptized by immersion on profession of their faith. This church was constituted on the principles generally received by the Baptists. Elders William Mason, Hemy Goodlow, John Pickett, John Koons, being present declared them an orderly Bapitst church of Christ, at which time the church made choice of Elder John Koons as pastor.” Jackson, Adams, John Swindler, Joseph Biyan, Sara Bryan, Sofa Jones, Cloe Swindler, were among the early members. September 11, 1790. “A matter of distress arose between Ann Chapman and Betsey Smith and John Koons, Charles Yates, Mollie Yates, Betsey Manefee, and Cloe Swindler appointed to settle the matter. John Swindler and Hen. ry Manifee chosen to prepare a deed for Isaiah Bryan to acknowledge, a piece of land to the church where the church house stands.”
Until 1826 the church was a member of the Shilo Baptist Association, but because of Missionary Societies they withdrew from the association. At a church meeting July 1,1826, an order was made “to have nothing to do with the General Association of Missionary Sociaties of Virginia.”
February 21,1891, the church again divided. Elder Charles L. Yates and his followers started Sunday School and Missionary Society, preaching the means doctrine, the things the church had declared against in 1826. It was agreed that each side hold meetings in the same house.
The old meeting house became in bad repair and rather than repair it it was agreed that the side known as the Regular Baptists have the hill and the old house while the Primitive Baptist side built their house in the lower land.
While Elder J. B. Jenkins was pastor in 1916 the Primitive Baptist built a new house and held their first meeting in the house the fifth Sunday in October, 1916.
Since this time Elder J. B. Jenkins, Elder A. F. Suddeth, and Clarence Frazier have been pastors. The writer is the present' pastor.
