Problem of Fruit Industry
In ease of pooling resources and knowledge, a group of orchardists met recently in Rappahannock to try and thresh out some answers to ‘‘What’s wrong with the apple industry and what can we do about it?”
It was a large bite and required much chewing and swallowing.
“ ‘What’s wrong?* ” said one grower. ‘‘That’s easy: .we aren’t making any money out of the crops—but ‘What can we do?’ is what most of us want to know!”
A statement of the conditions in the county stemmed from one conclusion : production of apples is on a near percentage of 30% U. S. No. 1, 2i” or better, and 70% for the processor. •
There is no great problem in marketing the 30% of fancy apples, but the bulk, or the T0%, is where the trouble lies, for from this portion of the crop Hie or* chardist must derive his livelihood. Prices for the 70% of the crop in the past year were insufficient to justify picking the fruit.
