age of the tree. Once these are iderstood, the rest is largely a

For the young tree the primary Objective is merely to establish a simple framework of branches (vith a minimum of cutting. This lim gives the enterprising amateur a fine start toward the suc:essful development of his tree. If le makes a mistake, the worst that can happen is a delay in fruiting as a result of overenthusiasm.
Even after the tree has started to bear, pruning (particularlyof the apple tree) may require no more than the removal of a few small branches. Since the sunlight must strike the ripening fruit in order to produce attractive coloration, aU interlocking and crossing branches which interfere with the more productive one are removed. These branches are generally thin for their age. What is more, they clutter the center of the tree to interfere iwith the use of spraying equipment, which in the case of email plantings, is generally unsatisfactory for adequate coverage.
