The four scaffolds with their side branches might be said to resemble a huge leaf. Observed from above, the pattern of the whole tree is something like a clover leaf. This division of the bearing surface into separate segments differs considerably from other types in which the periphery of the tree nominally describes a complete circle. Basis of the Theory
The theory behind this more recent type of pruning is based on two major contentions: (1) that more sunshine is allowed to penetrate to the center of the tree, thus improving fruit color; (2) that, by opening these “doors” inward to the center of the tree, orchard operations such as spraying and picking are more effectively accomplished. Unfortunately, iwe* ' have no experimental evidence as to the value of “clover leaf” training as compared with” standard practice.
It is obvious that texchange to this more arbitrary type of pruning after a tree is well grown involves the removal of a considerable amount of bearing surface. It has been done in a few orchards but it is agreed that a tree should be trained when young.
At an early age, the pruning process is similiar for all types. Leave not more than three or four well-spaced laterals on the trunk. After that, as side branches develop, the open V-shaped wedge narrowing in toward the trunk can be achieved by a stem removal of all encroaching branches.
As time goes on, however, there is nothing to prevent these separate segments from becoming overly* thick, thus losing the advantage of increased sunlight. Here, then, as in other types of pruning* small, unproductive branches and crossing, interlocking limbs must be thinned out.
