was the birthday of Alessandro Volta, Italian physicist, 1746. The gentleman invented the Voltaic pile (or else a book I read was nothing hot a passel of lies), an apparatus for developing electric currents by chemical action, and volts were named for him, I think —if not, that’s what it sounds like, anyway. Whether volts were named for ‘Volta or not, I am interested in electrical problems, too. Take, for instance, when you plug in a bridge lamp or the electric toaster and all the lights in the house fizzle and go out^ I’m interested in knowing why it happens at <my house instead of at my neighbor’s. I’d be happier if the volts—or whatever they are—and regardless of for whom they are named—worked according to the switches and push-buttons,

A store in Front Royal had a little push-button trouble t’other night. When closing time came, the light switches were clicked; nothing happened. The light button said “off” but the lights were still on. They burned all night. The electricians came in to find the trouble. By three o’clock in the afternoon they were still scratching their heads. They switched the light button to “off;” nothing happened. They switched them to “on;’ still nothing happened. They examined wires; they checked and re-checked.
