Ways and means of increasing the numbers of wild game were discussed Representatives of Game Commission stressed the fact that stocking quail was not a satisfactory means of increasing the population. Research, shows that the best method is to provide more and better food patches that are located near desirable cover. Adequate cover is necessary for birds to protect them from their predators. Food patches such as Bicolor Lespedeza are necessary to provide food during prolonged periods when the ground is covered with snow. Bicolor holds its seeds all winter, thus being accessible to the birds. The Soil Conservation Districts and the Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries cooperate in distributing seeds and plants for wildlife plantings to farmers who are ^interested in wildlife conservation. Planting materials that are available include, Bicolor plants- and seed, Sereda Lespedeza seed, and the annual quail mixture which contains a number of seeds rdishe<T by quail ami other birds. .From the standpoint of quality ot herbage grass-clover mixtures, have apparently been somewhat better than pure grasses for beef cattle in a -test ■which has been underway at VP!. Agricultural Experiment Station for three years.
However, Dr. Roy Blaster, agronomist at the Station, says all f th mixtures were “.satisfactory" from , the, standpoint of quality. Six species and mixtures - Kentucky 31 fescueladino clover, orchard grass-ladino clover, orchard grass-lespedeza-red- . top, orchard grass alone, and Kentucky 31 fescue alone - are being testd with steers. Aim of fhe study'is to determine the quality of pastures as shown by .the daily liverweight gain, and on carrying capacity as shown by the number of animals carried per acre. Seasonal distribution of herbage is also being studied, Dr. Blaser Said the experiment will be continued for at least three more years.
