In case you don't want to wait for Sunday to celebrate a birthday of a famous person, go ahead and celebrate today. Nikolaus Koppernigk was born in Prussian Poland February 19, 1473. Under his Lavin name, Copernicus, he concocted the Copernican system of astronomy, which has the earth going around the sun, in opposition to the Ptolemaic system, which had the sun going around the earth.
Since they didn't have radios and newspapers in those days, a lot of people kept on believing Ptolemy, though I was taught that Copernicus was right. But then, there was compulsory education by the time I arrived on the scene, and that may have had something to do with it. But then, again, it may not have; I heard a heated argument the other day about whether the earth was flat.
