In a game that saw the Rappahannock Chiefs load the bases with one man away in the last inning, but then fail to push across those game-winning runs as Hornshell, the Clarke County pitcher, born down, the local Chiefs lost their second home encounter Sunday, May 17, after a delayed start stortened the game by two innings.
Ranny Aylor started for the Chiefs, but was driven from the mound by the big Clarke Co. bats which hammered out 8 hits and 8 runs before Ned Settle came in from third base to extinguish the fire. Old Ned really handcuffed the visitors; from then on he allowed single hits each inning from the second on out and allowed only one runner to advance to second.
Wisecarver was top man for the day as he collected 4 straight safeties. He was aided by 3 of his teammates who knocked out a pair of singles each. Top honor for the Chiefs at the plate went to Ned Settle who smacked a double and a single and Sissy Corder who netted a pair of one base knocks.
No doubt the poor playing conditions made some difference to the boys in the field, but in spite of the mud and slick grass, the Chiefs played the cleanest game of the season.
Another good turn-out by local fans kpt the game moving at a lively pace.
