LEADERSHIP OF VIRGINIA RECALLED BY CEREMONIES
Last week I had the privilege of accompanying President Eisenhower to Williamsburg, the Colonial Capital of Virginia, where he received an honorary degree and participated in the inauguration of Admiral Alvin D. Chandler as President of the College of William and Mary. My personal interest in this event was increased by the fact that Admiral Chandler’s father, Dr. J. A. C. Chandler, a former President of William and Mary, was my English teacher at Richmond College. 1 he son does credit to a distinguished father. On May 15, 1926, as a member of "Governor Byrd’s staff I helped to entertain President Coolidge when he came to Williamsburg for the 150th anniversary of the Virginia Resolution of Independence and to receive a degree. Restoration of- 13th Century Williamsurg was just beginning then 'but last week President Eisenhower spoke in the Chamber of the House of Burgesses in the reconstructed Capitol and had in front of him the original document drafted by Edmund Pendleton and passed by the Virginia Convention on May 15, 1776. To me the most significant feature of the program was the fact that for the first time a President of the U.S. spoke from the historic site where the foundation was laid for our American heritage of Constitutional Liberty.
