Stored Grain Problems

One of the big problems of our farmers today is that of producing insect-free grain and preventing 'insect, rodent, and bird contamination of this grain in storage. Yet it is largely the farmers responsibility to deliver to the millers and grain dealers a higher quality grain before much further progress can be made in supplying consumers with contamination-free meal, flour and processed cereal foods.
Recently the senate committee on Agriculture and Forestry concluded hearings on the grain sanitation program of the Food and Drug Administration. This group had announced previously that proposed regulations with respect to insect in-, festations in grain would become effective July 1, 1953. The rodent control phase of the Agency’s program has been in effect for about a year Since last fall they have seized 30 car loads of wheat in interstate commerce because of rodent contamination alone. Regardless of what action is finally taken with respect to the proposed regulations the Extension Service proposes to continue its educational program for clean grain. Loss of stored grains due to insects, birds or rodent contamination is an economic drain on the producer.
