Slate Mills Post Office To Be Abolished
Representative Burr P. Harrison has been informed that the Post Office Department plans to abolish the post office at Slate Mills, Rappahannock County.
Mr. Harrison said he had been notified by Assistant Postmaster General N. R. ’Abrams in a letter which stated, in part:
“It is the Department’s plan to recognize the service by extending and establishing rural routes, making changes in the star routes and discontinuing the office named. These changes will bring about service improvements. —
“These plans have been carefully studied by the Department, considering the various service features, costs and possible savings. The postal deficit is a very serious problem and while it is intended to improve the service to the public wherever possible, consideration must be necessarily given to the cost in relationship to the service afforded.”
The letter used the phrase, “contemplates the discontinuance,” and no date was mentioned for the proposed closings.
