Welfare Dept. Draws 1953 “Trend” Picture
Cases on the public assistance rolls in Virginia increased 1.7 per cent - during 1953, while total monthly payments in the State rose nine per cent, Mrs. M. Elizabeth Buntin, superintendent of the Rappahannock County Welfare Department said today.
Decreases in Old Age Assistance, Aid to the Blind and General Relief during the year were offset by increases in disabled, dependent children and foster care cases, she reported. Increases in average payments in all categories during the year boosted total monthly payments.
Thse 'figures, the superintendents explained, were based on monthly summaries for 1953 through November. December figures will not be tabulated until reports from* all local welfare departments are made in January.
