In -January', 1953, public assistance cases received $2590, in all categories of assistance. In November, the total case load was 119, total monthly expenditures $2723.

In the state in the first month of the year 1953, 34,973 cases received $1,261,415 in all categories. In November, the cases load had increased to 35,569, and total expenditures were $1,379,379. Total expenditures in Virginia for the year will be over $15,000,000, the Superintendent reported.

Caseloads are down, the Superintendent added, from. two years ago by 2.3 per cent, and total payments are up 11 per cent since December 1951. _ -v ; ’ The greatest increase during the, year was in the aid to the disabled program. Upffwenty per cent in the state, the case load in this program rose 42 per cent in Rappahannock County during the year, the Superintendent said. This program, she explained, began in October 1950, and many of t)he cases formerly on general relief have been transferred to this program, which is one of the Federal government assistance programs. The disabled program provides assistance for permanently and totally disabled persons *for whom no curative measures are known or advisable. In November, there were 17 of these cases in Rappahannock County, and 4,172 in the state.

Rescue Squad Sponsors Square Dance

A dance will be held Friday, January 15 (tomorrow night) in the Rappahannock County High School auditorium in Washington for the benefit of the Washington Rescue Squad. Good behavior is guaranteed.
