To General Assembly
Despite inffation and the Korean war, Virginia made great progress in many fields during the past four years, Governor John S. Battle reported to the General Assembly yesterday. ,
On the fiscal side of the fouryear picture, the Governor summarized the situation in this way: “During the past four years we have lived within our income. As services have expanded and living costs have gone up, every phase of the State’s activities has required increased appropriations, but we will close this fiscal year with a small surplus.
He referred to enlarged state revenues as a result of inflation and business expansion incident to the Korean war and pointed out that general fund revenues had risen from $95,000,000 in 194950 to $125,800,000 during the current fiscal year. Nearly $9,500,000 of this increase came abopt by ‘enforcement efforts of the Department of Taxation.”
