McCarthy controversy IS HURTING U.S. ABROAD

Toy headlines in Washington newspapers were given last week to developments in the dispute (between the Army and Senator McCarthy’s Investigating Subcommittee and little attention was paid to well documented speeches made on the Flocw of the Senate by opponents of Statehood for Hawaii.

This was understandable, from a journalistic point of view and I do not criticize the papers for giving prominence to what they felt would appeal to the largest number of readers. Butr nevertheless, I feel the result was regrettable from a national standpoint on two grounds: First, because I feel more attention should be paid to the material threat of Communism in Hawaii, and second, because the controversy over methods used by some of those who have been v dealing with subversives in this nation gives! aid and comfort to the Communists abroad and discourages our democratic allies.

I believe we must be constantly on the alert ]to identify and to remove from government service all Communists and prosecute under the Smith Act all who advocate -the overthrow of our Government by force or who would make us subject to alien control. I voted for the appropriation for the original Dies Committee on Un-American Activities and as a member of the House and the Senate I have voted for every subsequent appropriation for investi—gation of subversive or- un-atncrican activities.
