The Holy Spirit and Mission*

John 15-16

By Rev. G. M. Profitt

In our travels with Jesus, we follow Him now as He and His little band leaves the upper room and heads for the garden. This 15th chapter was spoken somewhere- along the way to Gethsemane and most likely they were then passing along and ibeholdinrg the vineyards of Palestine as IhejT talked- He took the symbols the vine and applied it to Himself as the central source of strength, life and general supply to the branches. He then warned them as to their imperative need of being in Him in order to bear fruit for the Kingdom of God.

Israel is referred to in various places as God’s Vineyard. Ps. 80:8, Hcsea 10:1; Is. 5, speaks of Israel as a grape vine bringing forth wild grapes and many other references are made by various authors.

Now some people try to take this Chapter and prove the falling from grace idea, but Jesus had no reference to that. He knew all children when they are born and up to the age of accountability are covered by His grace, but each one must choose for himself as to whether he wants to serve Jesus or Satan. If we choose Jesus we are in the Vine-and will bear fruit as an evidence of our abiding in the Vine. But if we have only made a lifeservice confession and pur fruit is wild grapes instead of real cultivated ones then we aren’t in the vine and will be cast forth to be burned.
