Senator Joe McCarthy has prompted many an outburst of oratory, some rich, some decidely inferior and more indifferent in quality. The following thoughts— borrowed from a fellow editor—we feel may well come to rest among the “rich.”
It is reassuring to reflect that Senator Joe McCarthy is not new in American history and that, like his predecessors, he’ll probably pass from the scene, leaving no significant trace upon the sands of our time. There have been others ‘like him.
Huey Long, for a time, cut quite'a figure as he tried to convert the American people to the way of thinking to which he had managed to sway a majority of his fellow Louisianians—that every man, with his help, could be a king. With a ruthlessness equal to Joe’s, and with the same arrogant assumption of selfrighteousness— and a corollary assumption that all who disagreed with him should be destroyed in the public interest— he occupied, for a time, a prominent, if sometimes also disturbing place in the public mind.
