Church bells “will toll in the major cities and hamlets of the" nation tomorrow, Friday, ; April 1st, to signal the opening of the 1955 Cancer Crusade. H. B. Winfrey, county chairman, has announced tomorrow as the day when Rappahannock citizens will begin their campaign to raise money for the American’s Cancer Society three-pronged attack on cancer through research, education and service to cancer patients.

In Virginia, where cancer took the lives of 3,723 persons in 1954, the Crusade will be led by Brig. Gen. Frank Camm, USA, retired, of Amherst County.

Cancer Control Month has been proclaimed in the state by Governor Thomas B, Stanley. In his proclamation, the governor calls attention to estimates which indicate that 1200 persons in Virginia were saved from death by cancer in 1954. “The American Cancer Society reports that twice this number could be saved with ■V present knowledge in cases where ' — diagnosts+is early and treatment tS *’ • prompt." The President of the United States has proclaimed April as a month for a special effort to con; quer cancer, the enemy of man. “I urge our citizens to support the American Cancer Society and to take advantage of this opportunity to learn as much as possible about this enemy within our midstcancer.” | ..... i

The goal for the Virginia Division during the April Crusade is nearly $40,000 more than last year. Each dollar received is channeled into the society’s three phases of activity: education of the public to the danger signals of cancer and the need for regular physical check ups; research into the Ckuse and cure of cancer; and service to! cancer patients. 1 !
