Another innovation in the world of hosieiy is noted by Miss L Byrd Johnson, clothing specialist at VPI.
The new stretchable hose, which have both advantages and disadvantages, are made of a type of nylon yarn marketed under such trade names as “Helenca,” “Chardolon,” and “Burmil,” and others.
The yam is made of many fine filaments, which when relaxed become contracted and coiled. This special yam allows tremendous stretch.
Some advantages of this yam are better fit, more comfort,, and longer wear, provided certain precautions are taken.
A disadvantage, for which manufacturers have not yet found a remedy, is “piling” or roughing up when the surface of the hose comes in contact with rough skirt hems, harsh lace on slips, or the rough lining of overshoes or boots.
Misit Johnson says if you want to experiment with the hose be prepared to pay higher prices and check the hems of your skirts and ; slips and the lining of your boots'' or overshoes for harsh or rough places.
