A meeting, .attended by the County Health Director, Public Health Nurse, Parents and Teachers, was held in the Rappahannock County High School on Monday night to discuss the proposed poliomyelitis program in this county. The following comments were made by Dr. Allman in- answer to 4' questions by the group. A final report is expected around the first of April as to the success of this vaccine; however, plans are being made by the Health Department and the National Foundation for Infantile paralysis so that as soon as this vaccine is licensed, the clinics can begin. It is hoped this vaccine can be given before the polio “season” starts. This vaccintf is to be available to all 1st and 2nd grade children in the United States, Hawaii and Alaska. This is not an experiment but an attempt to erradicate poliomyelitis in this country. This group was selected as being the most succeptible age for contracting poliomyelitis and at this time there is not enough serum to be available to everyone; however, it is hoped that within a year it will be available to private prysidans. --The vaccine is not considered harmful or dangerous. There is is minute amount of penicillin in the vaccine to prevent bacterial growth but there has been no record of any child reacting to the vaccine or penicillin. _
The National Foundation for Infantile paralysis furnishes ‘the vaccine without cost and local doctors are conducting the clinics free of charge.
It has not been determined yet how long die vaccine affords immunity as it has not been used long enough to tell. It is felt, however, that it will possibly render some degree of immunity for one’s lifetime.
