Ernest Smoot Dies; Fire Destroys Home

> Ernest Smoot, 79, lost his life when fire, of undetermined origin, consumed his home near Washington, Tuesday night, -around

The fire, discovered by the family of Addie Foster, was reported to the Washington Volunteer Firej Department. It had gained so much headway that when the Firemen arrived on the scene, the floor,: ceiling and sections of the walls had burned through.

When told by bystanders of the . room that Mr. Smoot would most likely have been in, the firemen consentrated on that section. The body was found, on its back, in the fireplace. The emphasis was then directed to other parts of the house and to the surrounding grounds. Although there was high wind it was in the direction of a swamp, near the house, and blew away from the mountain. The fire trucks remained until after 12 o’clock.

Under order of J. P. Snead, County Coroner and Willian# F. Moffett, Commonwealth Attorney, the body was taken to 'Richmond by Sheriff J. W. Critzer for an autopsy to determine the cause of dfcath. ' ' ». |
