The text ef the Air Force reply to Mr. Harrison’s inquiry follows; as signed by Col. Gordon B. Knight of the Office of Legislative Liaison:
“This is in response to your inquiry of 15 February 1960 with regard to a news item concerning the alleged importation of canned poultry’ containing a virus to Great Britain for United States Air Force consumption. The delay in furnishing this reply is regretted, however, a full report had to be obtained from the oversea commander.
“I am advised that the importation of canned poultry allegedly containing a virus for use by the Air Force in lEngland is based on a news article which appeared in a British publication, ‘Farmer and Packer Trade Journal,’ Volume 142, dated 20 February 1060. The Journal carried an article which stated that, ‘canned poultry imported for United States Air Force Bases in Britain has been blamed for fowl pest outbreaks by Norfolk Member of Parliament, Albert Hutton. He told Minister John Hare here last week that the Norfolk National Farmers LTnion (NFU) claimed to have evidence that pest virus was in the cans.’ The United States Agricultural Attache, United States Embassy, London, England, communicated with the NFU who advised they had been misquoted.
