If this horrid spectacle could be viewed dispassionately and admittedly, it is difficult to do so.— it would appear unbelievable that anything but a disservice to national unity could result. Neither Constitutional principles nor the prerogatives of individual citizens could be seen as advanced by such a debacle of reason.
Because it is an election year, non-Southern leaders of both political parties are striving to outdo their opposite numbers by knifethrowing performances which they hope will bring them- huzzas at the polling planes for the courage and determination of their impalement of fellow-Americans.
The first assumption of this evil crusade is that Southerners have an inbred contempt for individual liberties and, therefore, it is essential that forcible measures be taken through mass Federal precautions to bring them to account. This fiction is bolstered by the misappropriation of the term “civil rights” to embrace the assortment of strictures proposed to be applied to the South.
