orchards for the production of super trees. Industrial and state foresters are searching Virginia’s woods for the superior parent trees.
These trees are graded on very rigid standards. Superiority is based on tree height, diameter, growth rate, limb size, limb angle, straightness of the trunk, rapidity of natural pruning, freedom from insects and disease, and wood quality.
Cuttings are obtained from the trees which make the grade by shooting down limbs with a rifle. These cuttings are grafted onto seedlings already planted in the seed-orchard. If the grafts are successful, all of the limbs are pruned off of the planted trees. Only the grafted portion is left to grow.
The super trees of the future wi|l provide greater returns to the landowners. The characteristics of straightness, faster growth, etc., will mean more trees can be grown per acre and there will be less wood waste.
To date, the Division of Forestry has found 14 loblolly pines and -1 shortleaf pines which qualify as superior trees.
