LAMBS
The Iamb crop for the nation is running two per cent higher than this time a year ago.
However, the Virginia crop is three per cent smaller. West Virginia is also down three per cent, and Kentucky down seven per cent. The smaller Virginia crop is largely due to heavy losses from the past severe winter weather.
During the past month, prices declined seasonally with a drop of $3 in the state on Choice and Prime. There was less decline on lower grades. Slaughter lambs were down $3.50, and utility lambs down only $1.
Utility lambs last week ranged in price from $13 to $16, about average of $14. Prime lambs were >21 and Choice $19.
Chicago prices for Choice and Prime ran about $21 to $22.
Farmers would do well to keep slaughter lambs to an average weight of 85 pounds or better before bringing them to market. Right now, the feeder lamb situation looks about as favorable as in recent years.
