There Can Be No Vacuum

Some years ago a young mother presented her infant son to the President of Washington College for his blessing. This man, the most revered man the State of Virginia ever produced, looked at the child and said, “Teach him he must deny himself."
As I read the promises of the Democratic platform in one column, and the promises of the Republican party in a parallel column, I can’t help but think of those words. What we are now, offered by a benign government is, a home for everybody, a job for everybody, security for everybody, freedom from fear and want, medical, aid equality, all for the asking. All without the least assump tion of any responsibility whatsoever on the part of the individual.
What has happened to the doctrine of self denial and the belief that success attends the assumption of responsibility? Are the people of this country sold on a give-away future?
To those who believe we as a people, have shifted completely from the old thought pattern to the new, consider the re-election of Senator Robet A. Taft , year after year in the industrial state of Ohio. How many others feel, as the working people of Ohio evidently felt, that responsibilities must be assumed and security must be earned? We don’t know, because we haven’t been given the chance to declare ourselves. Rut politics, like nature, abhors a vacuum. Too long, now, the people of this country, and particularly we in Virginia, have been denied the leadership that dared presept us with a choice.
The warning light showed plainly in the last general assembly that met in Richmond. The vacuum where conservative leadership used to,,be is drawing in an entirely different type of organization.
