Contestants start flocking to the grounds SaturJay afternoon fiutn all over Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Kentucky, the District of Columbia, and as far afield as Louisiana and Nebraska. A relaxed picnic atmosphere prevails as the musicians tune up and families settle down on blankets and folding chairs to enjoy their favorite country', western, hillbilly or bluegrass music.
Last year 155 musicians competed for $1,000 in prize money in five divisions band, banjo, fiddle, vocal and miscellaneous. Winners receive $150 and a national championship certificate, while second place is worth $50.
