It is believed that the snake was roused from its home in a nearby tract of land which is being cleared.
Rattlesnakes (about 15 kinds) are the most widely distributed of poisonous snakes. They belong to the family of pit vipers, so named because of a deep pit between the eyes and nostrils. The timber rattier is found in most of the eastern United States.
Rattlesnakes have a series of dry segments on the end of the tail, which they vibrate rapidly when disturbed, causing a whirring noise. The snake does not strike without warning. Contrary to popular belief a rattlesnake does not add a rattle each year. Usually two or three are added, so the snakes age cannot be determined by it% rattles.
All species are large enough to inject sufficient venom to kill a man, however, they are not easily provoked and will usually endeavor to escape, or if cornered, to frighten an aggressor by - rattling and puffing themselves out.
In all species the eggs are retained within the body of the mother until the young are ready to emerge.
