Rattlesnake Killed
In Merrill’s Yard
Sarah Latham Charles Jenkins called me at the office Friday to tell me to come to Merrill’s Garage if I wanted a picture of a rattlesnake for the paper. My first question was “Is it dead?” When he answered yes, my next question was, “Are you sure?” They are characters with which I do not care to have a speaking acquaintance. The snake-, a timber rattler measuring over four feet in length with nine rattles, was killed Friday afternoon in the yard at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. V. Merrill at Washington, Va., by Clabert Smoot.
When Mrs. Merrill heard the dogs barking unusually long and loud, she investigated to find them vapping at a snake and immediately got a hoe to kill it. She struck it once, wounding it, before she realized by its rattling and hissing that it was a rattlesnake. She then phoned to her husband’s garage for help and Clabert Smoot hurried to the Merrill home to completethe job.
