Prevent Accidents
To Farm Children
“The bumper crop of child accidents which is being harvested annually on farms can be prevented", Dr. L. O. Fears, Jr., Local Health Director, declared yesterdaiy.
Dr. Fears pointed to insecticides, farm ponds, machinery, fails, fire and firearms as the leading causes of accidental death and crippling to children On farms.
The Accident Prevention Project of the local Department of Public Health is designed to call attention to the tact that 26,000 accidental deaths and 3,900,000 crippling accidents occur to children and adults each year in the home area. Accidents kill more children and young adults in the home area than does any disease or even traffic accidents.
“Children who live on farms have more varied dangers with which to cope than do other youngsters”, Dr. Fears said. The efficient but lethal insecticides containing parathion, DDT, TEPP. and other dangerous agents should be placed under lock and key to be used with great care.
To prevent drowning in ponds, lakes and creeks, Dr. Fears suggested that, farm parents provide their small children with a fenced play yard so that they won’t stray to a watery death. He also advised teaching children to swim as early as possible.
“A fenced play yard will also protect'’children from such farm hazards as machinery, sharp implements and other causes of crippling mishaps”, he added
