The population of the State of Virginia has increased in the past ten years, according to the 1960 census, but Rappahannock County has decreased in population by 744 inhabitants.
The census taken in 1950 listed Rappahannock’s people as 6,11-2, as compared to the April 1960 count of 5,368, which is over a 15 percent drop.
By Districts the population of Rappahannock is: Hampton 1,330; Hawthorne 405; Jackson 1,028; Piedmont 797; Stonewall 653; and Wakefield 1,155. The Town of Washington has 255 inhabitants.
For the State, the official population count as of April 1, 1960 was 3,966,949. This is a gain of 648,269 or 19.5 percent over the 3,318,680 inhabitants of the State in 1950.
In counties adjoining Rappahannock the population is as follows: Culpeper 15,088; Page 15,572; Fauquier 24,066; Warren 14,655. Fairfax is the Heaviest populated county with 275,002, though Norfolk, an independent city, has 305,872 inhabitants and Richmond has 219,958.
