irginia’s Art
By Leslie Cheek, Jr.
Director, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
The Virginia Museum is celebrating its 25th Birthday. In 1936, as the nation's first state-supported art museum, it was given a mandate to promote the enjoyment of art throughout Virginia. Today it is one of the leading non-metropolitan museums in the •world. Its pioneer Artmobile visits the cities and towns of Virginia, and traveling exhibitions go constantly to schools, libraries, clubs, colleges and art centers throughout the Commonwealth. The nationally known director of the state museum, Leslie Cheek, Jr., describes the great masterpieces of art in the museum's collections— the cultural heritage of all Virginians. This is one of a series of articles which will appear each week in this newspaper.
