Reasons for all three actions were the same, possible residue that might reach dairy or beef cattle through feed crops and end up in milk or meat. Any heptachlor found in milk will cut a dairyman off from his market for an extended period until the residue clears up, the Department said.
To avoid this possibility, the Federal Food and Drug Administration last spring clamped .a zero toleriance for heptachlor in any form on alfalfa shipped interstate.
On recommendation of VPI, the Department approved heptachlor and some of its fertilizer mixtures for use on alfalfa after the 1960 crop was completely harvested, but prior to October 15.
Today's announcement ruled out spring application on the 1961 crop. For farmers who didn’t use heptachlor this fall, and find their alfalfa infested with weevils this spring, VPI recommends spraying with malathion or methoxychlor, according to directions.
