One of the excitements of studying paintings is the glimpse of the daily life of other times and other places 30 often to be found in them. The Dutch 17th Century painters were particularly adept at this phase of painting, frequently preferring a rather coarse, peasant kind of subject for their canvases. But many of them also painted intimate scenes from richer households. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ “A Musical Patty," the gift of Wilkins C. William?, is such a painting, and its painter Jan Miense Molenaer (ca. 16-01668), has faithfully recorded the luxuries of the household.
