So far, in meeting with Rappahannock Sheepmen, the biggest cause of our lambs being bom out of season is the result of leaving the rams with flocks year round. Arthur Miller couldn’t get away from the post office for our meeting with the Washington group so was nice enough to come by the office a few days later. In 1957-58 he’d left his ram with the flock, resulting in two lamb crops in ,1958. This usually knocks the day lights out of profits from a flock and it did for Arthur in 1959.
Mrs. John Williams reported at the Forest Grove meeting they breed their ewes to start lambing in November. In 1959 the Williams sold 39 lambs of which 51% graded prime. All but five were marketed before July 1 (or before hot weather) averaged 87-100 pounds and brought from $25.00 to $28.10 per head! That’s the way to make a profit and stay in business. Congratulations M r s. Williams!
All lambs should be on creep now. Our better shepherds, at least those making the most profit, fed stock feed, cracked yellow com or whole shelled corn. The whole shelled corn being used after lambs have been on creep for a week or two and the change being made very' gradually..
Ewes suckling lambs should get 1% pounds 16% dairy feed plus 3-5 pounds good leafy legume hay daily. Another good grain ration for ewes consists of equal parts by measure of corn, oats and brain allowing 1 Vi pounds per ewe per day.
