Even the animals have been well groomed, and how exotic it is to have monkeys included with the family pets. The garden has been carefully trimmed, the flowers in the urns have been properly staked, and the marble paving, so rare in a land of no stone, has been carefully scrubbed.
Movement and animation were given the painting by the activity of, the servants and by the rather sly inclusion of the peasants fight^ ing at the extreme deft edge of the picture. The contrast between the elegance of the main group and the peasants against the old farmhouse points up the earthiness of the fortunes vvluch made this remarkable gathering possible;
Jan Micnse Molenaer was one of the large group of painters who worked in Haarlem in 17th Century. He came under many influences during his life..the Italianate influence carried back to Holland by such painters as Terbrugghen, the influence of Hals under whom Molenaer’s wife had studied, the gusto and robustness of life of such painters as van Ostade and Brouwer, and finally the influence of Rembrandt. In fact after 1650 Molenaer’s style became so Rembrandtesque that his later paintings were sometimes thought to be by another Molenaer.
