Heavy government purchases of eggs will keep breakers active and a nation-wide egg promotion program will help shell egg consumption.

The Virginia egg price last week was 33 to 36 cents a dozen for grade A large and 28 to 29 for Grade A medium. New York stood at 36 to 40 for large and 30 to 31 for medium.

HOGS

Hog prices will be stable with perhaps a little strength during the next two or three weeks. They have been unusually steady now for about a month.

Normally hog prices are increasing as supplies decrease at this time, but this year hog numbers are not declining as fast relative to a year earlier. Relatively larger supplies will tend to cancel out the usual price strength.

So don’t gamble on a big price rise. Watch the market for weekto-week fluctuations and sell when your hogs reach best finish and weight for your market.

Hogs on Virginia auctions averaged $18 last week, with Richmond at $17.50 to $18, Southeast Virginia at $17.25 to $17.75, Baltimore at $18.25 to $18.50 and the western markets ranging from $16.50 to $18.
