“Follow the example of the professional truck drivers—keep your lights on for safety during die holiday weekends."
This is the urgent message that is being extended to all drivers of motor vehicles, says the Virginia Highway Users Association, the state trade association of the trucking industry.
Following a practice that was put into use Labor Day weekend this year, when traffic fatalities in the nation were significantly fewer than a year earlier, truck drivers will bum their lights ’jound the dock the two approaching holiday weekends. The two periods will run from Friday, December 22, through Tuesday, December 26, and Friday, December 29, through Tuesday, January 2.
In the nation there were 415 immed iate deaths from traffic cradles during Labor Day weekend in 1960. In 1961, when the lights on for safety program was put into practice, there were 350 immediate deaths. These figures do not include unavailable statistics on deaths that resulted later due to injuries. The truck drivers have asked all drivers to cooperate with them during the Christmas and New Year weekends. They believe that
